'Babalawo' murders woman after using charm to rape her

A Kwara State-based herbalist, popularly called Babalawo, has been remanded in prison custody by an Ilorin Magistrates' Court for allegedly murdering a woman after using charms to rape her.

The 27-year-old native doctor, Bunmi Popoola, according to Nigeria Crime, was said to have hypnotized his victim at Odo-Owa in Okeero Local Government Area of the state, to have sex with her which caused her death.

The man was sent to prison by an Ilorin Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for allegedly using charm to have carnal knowledge of a woman which caused her death.

The police prosecutor in the case, Corporal Adewumi Johnson, told the court that Popoola had used charm to have carnal knowledge of the victim which later resulted in her death.

Johnson said that police investigations into the matter revealed that the deceased fell sick sometime in 2014 and was taken to the accused for traditional medical treatment.

After treating her, Popoola allegedly invited the victim some months later to come to his house purportedly for another sacrifice and when she got there, he used charms to have sexual intercourse with her.

After sleeping with her, Popoola allegedly warned the deceased not to mention the act to anyone or she would die but when she got home, she went to the palace of the traditional ruler of the town, Oba Joshua Ademola, and reported the case which led to the accused being invited to the palace.

After the herbalist pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of murder preferred against him, the Magistrate, Ahmed Immam, ordered that he should be remanded at the Medium Security Prison, Mondala, while the case was adjourned till October 18, 2016, for further hearing.
