PDP governorship candidate condemns attack on ogun protesting workers

The Ogun State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election, Prince Gboyega Nasir Isiaka popularly known as GNI has condemned brutal attack of labour leaders and protesting workers by suspected party thugs in Abeokuta.

The workers had staged a peaceful protest against the government failure to implement agreement reached with them early in the year and non-remittance of 13 months Cooperative deductions and gratuities.

The peaceful protest which later turned violent by suspected thugs that beat harmless workers blue and black at Water Corporation junction in Abeokuta saw many running in different directions for safety.

Isiaka, who sympathised with the workers warned against politicizing a normal trade dispute and urged the rampaging party thugs that thought they were helping the State government to exercise restraint.

The investment banker turned politician said, “Trade dispute is a normal thing between workers and their employers. And there is nothing wrong for the workers to stage a peaceful protest to vent their anger and call public attention to their plight. But it is a misnomer to chase workers with rabid party thugs that turned peaceful protest to a blood-letting exercise. Why is it that protests by the workers or students are being resisted by thugs to the extent of chasing them with dangerous weapons?

“I feel sad with the reports of many harmless women that were brutalised by these party thugs. This is condemnable and uncalled for. It is undemocratic, uncultured and barbaric attempt to silence the labour.

“Government could have done better by engaging labour leaders in a sincere discussion and put all the facts and figures on the table. I am sure they are intelligent enough to reason with the government if there are genuine reasons to owe them as much as that, when we all know that these workers rely on these deductions to secure loans from their cooperative societies”.
